Event Description
The Annual Oration is one of Penn’s biggest free speaker events every year – this time, it will also mark the bicentennial annual oration of the Philomathean Society. The speaker, Dr. Hobbs is a professor of Public Philosophy at the University of Sheffield, advisor to the UK cabinet and the World Economic Forum. Her talk, “Why Plato matters now” will focus on the importance of Plato in modern context: in the wake of fake news, polarization, challenges to the rule of law and democracy, and artificial intelligence. In addition, Dr. Hobbs will share about her work at the World Economic Forum as a philosopher of ancient thought.
The event will feature a lecture by Dr. Hobbs, a 15-30 minute Q&A from audience (and a dinner for the members of the Society with Dr. Hobbs, discussing her speech). Please stay tuned for the event location update.
